Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
just giving another point of view.
:D
LOL. my life. omg... made sense to me.
I'm no expert, but I have learned---when I was in the hospital-- that by changing your thoughts, from negative, depressing, hopeless ones...to positive, uplifting hopeful ones, new connections can and ARE made. It's much harder to do on a daily basis than taking a pill.
IF you are unable or unwilling to practice regulating your thoughts diligently, then YES, you better take medicine to help with the chemical balance in your brain.
I do not agree that it is like diabetes or high blood pressure. It's a brain thing, and we have the power over what goes on up there.
There is plenty of research indicating that taking anti-depressants every day can cause damage to liver, kidneys, etc...thus the yearly or bi-yearly blood draws while you are on them.
Doctors say it cannot be cured? well, maybe "cured" is the wrong word. But it can certainly be managed WITHOUT drugs. I am living proof. I still have those dark and scary days, very occasionally --but I now know, that I will always climb back up, I have the power, I am strong. My brain and body are amazing things, and MINE has no intention of taking pills every day for the rest of my life.
i don't think that depression/anxiety/bipolar is like diabetes...cause the brain is not like the pancreas...they work together, but not the same....and the brain is a lot stronger than most people realize...i also agree that while it can't be cured it can be managed with or without drugs...i for one grew up taking medication for asthma, and am so greatful to my mom that when the medication started making me depressed, and behave "wierd", she knew it was time to take me off of it....and find another way to control my asthma...which we did....so if i can control my asthma without daily medication, then i know i can control my headaches, depression, and minor aches, pains, and ailments attributed to getting "older" without daily medication....
i think society today, is always looking for a quick fix by running out to 'take a medicine'; to medicate, to take a drug and mask the pain, and while it can and does help, it's not the be all, end all solution to all of our problems; be they health or mental problems...
-DR-
Depression/bipolar/anxiety runs rampant through my family. It is NO coincidence. It is biologically based - a chemical imbalance in my family genetics. One of my brothers started showing symptoms at 5 yrs. old & we grew up in a traditional nice family - no abuse or other traumas that would "cause" him mental illness.
Anyway, this is my opinion and I am sticking with it :)
I know there have been periods when I haven't need drugs and now I do I hope that I won't need then again but who knows? The medical establishment don't know either. There is no way, well currently, to know what /how/ why/ where mental health illnesses and disorders come from/ work/ come and go and we, as the human race, do not know enough about how the mind and brain work.
I am willing to find other ways out of this thinking but the therapists I have seen havent helped. There are downsides to the medicine, like with any medicine for any kind of health but I believe in the medicines to help these problems. I try to work on myself, but when you have been in this pattern for a very long time, I believe something else is needed.
