Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Sorry you are struggling..i know how hard it is to function when I dont sleep..I dont want to be around others, get very sensitive and crabby..I have been taking magnesium 'calm' which is a powdered magnesium you can mix with hot water and sip anytime...helps before bed and has helped me sleep a bit better..maybe you could talk to your Dr and see if there are any other alternatives..I was taking sleeping pills for way too long and I can relate when you say you hate taking meds..maybe doing some exercise or yoga/meditation would help relax you as well..i have found the yoga/meditation so helpful
What is keeping you up? Do you have any physical pain issues? If so this needs to be addressed with pain meds or whatever to help you at least manage your pain enough to get some zzzs.
Any medications cause insomnia... have the dr check to make sure you aren't having side effects to something.
With many pscyhiatric medications just taking the pills isn't enough for some people.... in fact for most folks you have to take measures to help these medications work better.
So try the following suggestions:
1. get more excercise during the day if possible
2. expose yourself to more sunlight, ask the dr about a vit D supplement
3. ask the dr about the other supplements that may be helpful to you...
for myself I take Magnesium, vit D, B 50 complex, buffered vit c, fish oil caps etc.
4. do some activity to get your mind to focus on less troubling stuff and to tire you out a bit.... try mindless tv, listening to music (types that are soothing to you), art projects, certain computer games like sudoku, compuiter scrabble, online crossword puzzles, online jigsaw puzzles, reading etc etc. Some folks find journaling helps.
5. Avoid the news at night.
6. use noise machines
plenty other things to try but these are some ideas for you that I find helpful. Hugs Mia
