I work at a kennel, I have worked here for 2 years. I love the work, I love playing with and caring for the animals, I don't mind the cleaning, and most of the people I work with are nice. I also get about $1600 worth free vet care for my pets each year, which is nice because I have alot of pets, and not much money, haha.
But my boss, the kennel manager, favors 2 employees over anyone else, and she also favors herself. She sits on her ass during her shifts and makes whoever is working with her do everything. She has been in the company for like 20 years so she can get away with it. Myself and one other employee are essentially her b*tches, we get the crappiest jobs/hours, we get threatened with losing our job or getting our hours cut if we don't want to do something, and there is little benefits for working. I haven't gotten a raise in over a year and won't be up for one until next year. I work almost full time, she scheduled me just under full time for maximum work for min cash (I work like 33 hours, ft is 36 here). I was informed today I have to work christmas, my 3rd in a row. When I resisted, she threatened my job and my hours. She claimed she worked the last 15 christmases in a row. I don't know if thats true, but I know she didn't work last christmas, and I know shes not working this christmas. She did work with me my first christmas for about 4 hours then she went home. She isn't make one of her favored employees work because her grandma isn't doing well. My grandpa isn't doing well but I have to work, what makes her family more important than mine? I'm sick and tired of the crappy shifts, being told I HAVE to work, being told NO to requests off I make 2 months in advance, and working my butt of with little to show for it. I do like the work, and my boss could potentially make it hard for me to find work at another kennel because the company owns many of the same ones in the area. I need a job and can't just leave, but I am so miserable. My job is starting to be one of the worst things about my life, I dislike the atmosphere and drama so much, the fact that I love what I do isn't cutting it anymore, which in turn makes me even more upset.
I mostly just needed to vent, but any advice is appreciated.

I would still apply to those other places. I would tell those places you want to work there because you want to work full time (or if you were complaining about the hours, then because you need less), or because it's closer to your home/in an area you prefer. That way if word does get back to your boss, there isn't any question if you're leaving because of her.

buy books on hunting for jobs and how to interview that sort of thing. Definitely need to apply to other places. I know the feeling, when you are the shit person, it is hard to get out of it, You feel like they are going to make it hard for you if anyone does call. Find out if there are other bosses who don't like her, apply to those places.
