That was very inappropriate of her. My brother was referred to as "just an alcoholic" the very last time he was in the hospital and was buzzing the nurses' station because he was in pain. I found out months later. What the @#$% is wrong with these people that are supposed to be professionals?? I was asked not to make waves about the incident with my brother...but it has bothered me for years so I recently wrote a letter to the nurse...what I would have said to her had I had the chance. Some people read it and it will be included in a blog run by some good friends of mine. I hope it will help with this "labeling". I would not blame you one bit if you said something.

I think you SHOULD say something! Discussing details of people's medical files is against so many regulations it boggles the mind!

If you are worried about a specific person getting in trouble you can phrase it such that it is hard to pin down exactly who was talking.

Now as an aside, my wife is a nurse as is her sister. My sister married a doctor and one of my wife's brothers is a doctor. They all deal with stress about cases they work on and need relief. But they have all learned that they need to keep the talk amongst fellow professionals, and to omit details that could identify who they are talking about.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. I would be on the phone to whoever is in charge of these inconsiderate, rude, and ignorant so called employees In a heartbeat. I agree with everyone, you should call and report it. That is so rude and insensitive to make a comment like that, let alone in front of someone who may or may not have mental health issues. Just fires along with the stigma around mental illness, sadly.
