I applied to a kennel supervisor position that was open at a sister hospital (I work kennel at a different hospital) on a whim a few weeks ago. I interviewed, being told what I expected: they wanted someone with supervisor experience but they liked me and would call if they didn't find a better fit. I got a call today that I got the job. I excited, but panicking because its all so new and I don't really pursue new opportunities like this. I mean, I'm 24 and still a "kennel kid" haha. I will be managing a small team ( I think about 8 people) and in charge of kennel schedules, reviews, hiring ect. I have done kennel work since I was 18 so I'm familiar with that stuff, just a new place, with new coworkers, new rules, with new duties is so overwhelming! I can't stop freaking out and feel on the verge of a panic attack since I found out.

Any advice?

Congrats on the promotion. That is great news. Just breathe. If they didn't think you could do the job they wouldn't have hired you.

First off, congratulations on the promotion! You'll be just fine! Think of it as when you first started working with the kennel, and how you had to adjust and learn about the rules, get used to your co-workers, etc. It will be alright, this is just a great advancement in something that you've already been doing. If you weren't interested, you wouldn't have applied, right? You're qualified to do this, otherwise they wouldn't have promoted you. (: I wish you the best of luck!

First thing I learned many years ago in the same situations, be thick skinned, willing to listen with interest, still making your own assessments, and try to remember fairness and nothing is personal.

Do you thing as you know it to be and others will follow. People want to be led not managed. You will do great and I know you will have much success. You might be surprised how many people like to know they are following a confident and caring person.

Change is always stressful on some people. I am sure you will do just fine. Like mollgirl said, you have the experience, and take supervising one day at a time. You will get the hang of it. Congratulations!

Thanks everyone for the congratulations :) and the helpful advice too!

Now I just need to inform my manager I'm transferring...normally they require supervisors to sign off on transfers but shes been out on maternity leave and comes back today ! Whew! I wanted to tell her sooner, but....
