Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I'm sorry you are having difficulty finding/keeping friends. I've dealt with that off and on my entire life. I do have a few close friends but I tend to keep at an arms length from people, but every once in awhile, someone will sneak past lol.
I feel sad about what you said about not wanting to pressure our husband in the way of leaning on him for friendship....I think our spouse/S.O should be our best friend and never feel a pressure to be in that position, but I do understand wanting to have friends other than that as well. I also completely agree with you about it being harder to make friends as you get older. That is gospel truth right there, sadly.
As far as feeling like you have to tip-toe around topics with the women you know, and not be yourself, that I cannot relate with and I am truly sorry you feel the need to have to do that. Yes, there are a few subjects I will not broach with a few of my friends as I know it will end up in an argument, because I have NO problem saying what I think about certain issues (for instance, politics). I have dabbled in the conversation with them, but I prefer not to as I know where I stand and where they stand so I leave it alone lol.
I wish I had something good to advise instead of babbling here on your post. Maybe others will have better ideas. I know I have made a few very close friends here on this site and for that I am grateful!
*Big hugs* and I hope you and yours have a great Xmas :)
Hope you find the support you need. Nancy
I'm sorry that you feel that way. I don't really have friends, either. I "talk" to the friends I have via email and text mostly, but I haven't seen them in years. I don't know if that is healthy or not, but I really don't mind. My boyfriend of 9 years is my best friend and I love our little family with our 2 dogs. Have you thought about getting involved in your community? Do you belong to a church? How old are your children? If they are of school-age, how about getting more involved in your kids' school Parent Association or volunteering? I'm sure you could meet a lot of women your age that way. You could suggest a monthly dinner with a few other women and go from there. Find out about classes in your community. Maybe there's a cooking class or other class you could join. I'm sure there are many women in your same situation looking for the same thing you are looking for. I'm thinking of you. Good luck and be well.
The friends you do make as you get older are the ones to cherish. They are out there. It just takes more work. Best of luck to you!
Nancy - I will work on tracking down your post about this subject to get more input.
Thank you, TwoBoyz, for all your ideas.
And Twoleftsocks - I hear you about the Hallmark ads. Nope, life is definitely not like that. I guess I just miss the closeness I thought I had with the one friend. I do feel a big hole since she's not in my life anymore, but am very thankful for the relationships I do have. I guess it will happen when it happens in terms of having closer friendships with other women.
Thanks again one and all and happy holidays!
