Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Greetings Everyone,
I am new to this support group. My husband suffers from clinical depression, and has since he was a child. He has rollercoaster moments of highs and lows. I love him so much, but I don't know what to do to help. I joined this support group to learn how others with depressed spouses help them deal with depression.
I look forward to speaking to everyone! Thank you!

Try understanding him and helping him. Dont force him too much. This'll help

I am in the same situation. My husband is on his second week of meds and just started with the double dose yesterday. He came home Monday afternoon and said he didn't want to be in the marriage any longer. He said he was tired of watching me try so hard. He left and stayed in a hotel that evening and then called me the next day to say he wanted to talk. We did and he has decided to stay home. (At least for now) I had a counseling appt. that afternoon and was assured that after this week we should see a difference. I pray we do. He is the lowest I have ever seen him. I guess I am looking for pointers on how to "be" when he is home. We often just sit and I let him talk. He is making bad decisions right now with finances and other things. How do I intervene without making him feel like I am trying to control him? He has made the statement that everyone seems to know whats best for him but he knows better than anyone what is best for him. When I asked what is best for him, he said he didn't know. He said he is tired. I can only imagine he is. It has to be exhausting.

I am sorry to hear about your spouse. Its good that you are seeking medial advice. Be there to support your spouse in the moments he is low and provide positive feedback on his success. Your participation in a support group will help you understand his condition. Believe that things will change as you both progress.

My hubby has also been diagnosed with depression. There is no one singular trigger for his episodes. He's currently going thru what I refer to as "spells". They usually take place 2 times a year but this one came early and along with the depression, anxiety hit for the first time. They're always consistent. It starts with insomnia for days at a time, slowly going downhill until he hits rock bottom and he has a "break" then within days, starts to come back "up" but that's not happening this time. While he's back "up" a little, the insomnia persists, making him miserable. He says his mind just won't shut down enough to go to sleep. I've tried to get him to go to the doctor but with his accompanying anxiety with this "spell", he can't sit in the waiting room for more than a few minutes and the wait time once at the appointment is usually about an hour or so. I'm exhausted and frustrated playing caregiver.
