Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Tomorrow I have a doctors appointment. I really don't want to go because right now I don't feel he can do anything for me.
I really dislike my psychiatrist and want a new one but have no idea on how to go about asking for one. Am I just admitting my weaknesses? Is he gonna think i don't like him because he doesn't see me in the way I see myself?
Does anybody else hate admitting their weaknesses so much that they chose not to say anything? I know if I told him he could probably help or point me in the right direction, but by admitting it then it's real isn't it?

i hate admitting I am weak.its just pride.

Hmm I think possibly it could be with me too, admitting I'm weak makes me feel like I've failed

The trick is knowing that everyone has weakness and that it takes a very strong person to say "yes, I have trouble with this". Be proud of that. Everyone has their problems.

Thank you, I'm gonna try, I just never know how to say things

You'll find the words. :) Good luck!

Had a similar situation, actually wrote myself a note/script and read it to my doc basically.
ReginaPhalange
I thought about writing it down, but didn't want to sit there and read it out, I thought he may think I was silly

Zsig. thats a great idea. I always have a problem admitting my weakness. I think we all like to put on a strong front for others. Just try to remember, he is only trying to help and wont judge you.

You've made a great start just by admitting to us that you hate to admit to weakness! Give him one more chance before you switch, but keep in mind he can't help you if you don't let him in and let him help.

Try not to think about what the psychiatrist thinks of you, I know that can be hard, but they're there to help you, think of it that way, if poss.

I like what Star9 sez, we're actually pretty lucky when we know we should seek help, or ask for a change. Don't worry if your doc thinks your silly, mine thinks I'm MAD! hehe.

I know I'm supposed to trust my psychiatrist and stuff but he's so obsessed with labelling me, in 3 months he's tried to give me 4 or 5 new diagnoses, the lastest being schizoaffective which I just laughed at. The label thing is an issue for me, surely he should just be helping me and not trying to make me another statistic?
Eudaimonia
He may need to "label" you in order to help you. If he's attempted to diagnose you several times, sounds like he is trying to help. You cant treat a disease unless you know what it is. (i.e. you wouldnt treat a bee sting with headache meds).
deleted_user
if you can think of it in terms of not that you're being judged but that he is trying to figure out best approach, meds for you.

Diagnosing me would be fine, only I've had a diagnosis for 10 years, he's new and now has come up with a variety of things that I 'could' have. It's not like it's the same thing over and over, it's more he's clutching at straws, my dx of Bipolar II doesn't seem to be enough, he wants me Bipolar I, Borderline, CFS, it's like he just doesn't know what to do with me
