Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
YOU need to pick a time in your and your parents lives. When everyone's calm. Look at them dead seriously, and say... I NEED to have a serious talk with you.
Then calmly tell them about your stress, anxiety and depression. Tell them about your self harming too.
But YOU need to be very serious in this discussion and try to get them to understand what is going on.
Yes, parents are busy. They worry about money, jobs, kids their own relationships and trying to also make themselves happy.
Be serious about this and if you can. A booklet, or something for them to read and understand You and anxiety, depression and self harm. Might help them learn what your going through.
Maybe you can talk to them, or a friend or a school counsellor?
Maybe you can try this: Do you have your parents' cell phone numbers? Send both of them a short text - they must know it's from you.
Maybe you can send this: I self-harm and constantly want to die. I'm serious. I want to talk to you now!
At first they may think you're joking. Send it again and again until they 'get the message'.
Or, keep phoning them...
1. Try to be upbeat. Smile.
2. Greet people with enthusiasm with their name, hey's its Pam, how are you.
3. Try to understand friends and acquaintances, what is important to them.
4. Be a good listener. If there are 10 people at a function, don't try to run around to everyone, but give the person you are talking to full attention.
5. Try to dress well, not overly flashy, but good.
6. Be nice to people, being a jerk will catch up with you, though in the short run, you will see some popular nasty people.
7. Don't try to lead without consensus. I saw my son wait an hour while which movie to see was discussed rather than try to impose his choice. When he knew someone on TV but friends did not seem to be interested, he switched topics.
8. Be calm Don't take small slights to heart. Sometime they are not deliberate and in any case go along with things. As an example, he was in a band, said everyone get up and dance, no one did, and he just kept on going in an upbeat fashion with a big smile not letting it bother him (and not trying to impose his view) and later people did dance. .
