Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Please know that there are times when a person can "seem" completely fine....but they suffer in silence. This is especially the case with men as mental illness, such as severe depression, still has such a stigma.
I guess what I am saying is there was nothing you could do for him since as you said there were no indications. Please do not feel any guilt for not knowing something that you couldnt possibly have known.
And please dont think you did anything wrong due to his not wanting to see you. He is probably very ashamed and embarrassed right now. You did nothing wrong! This is very common for someone who has had an unsuccessful suicide attempt. They are embarrassed and angry that they were unsuccessful as it sounds like he had every intention in succeeding.
The question is...what do you do now. My I suggest that first you research clinical depression so that you can better understand its nature and what his needs are. Then, maybe a well-worded letter to him expressing your desire to help him when he is ready. People that are as depressed as he must be...need an enormous amount of support and understanding. He is in a great deal of pain and although I know he made the attempt...he probably didnt want to die so much as he wanted to escape the pain he is in.
Please understand that he may not respond immediately. He is going to need to go through a long process of assessment and probably hospitalization in a mental health facility due to his attempt. It may be some time before he is ready to talk with you but this does not mean he does not care about you...he just needs time and professional help to get him past this.
As for you...you may want to talk with someone yourself. Counseling is a wonderful thing and it may help you understand better and deal with your own feelings regarding this as well.
Good luck my friend! Sandy

The important thing is that he get help and talk to people. Him talking is more important than the specific people he talks to. I've had friends here who needed people, but for one reason or another I was not the one. It hurt a bit, but knowing that they found somebody to talk to made me feel better.
Has your relative found somebody to talk to? Hopefully somebody who will help him start talking to a therapist. That may be your role here; look amongst the people he knows to make sure that he is talking.
Gentle hugs
He is maybe embarrassed or pissed that he didn't succeed.
Someone who does that much harm to themselves...is indeed in need of much help. Try again in a couple days. :(
I have never been in this situation and I am sorry you are.....its horrible to want to help and to be rejected....but its not YOU....its his mental illness...hope they help this person.
