I know I need help and I'm finally ready to get help. My problem is right now I can't tell my family. We have a history of depression and suicide and they know I attempted once in highschool. They walked on eggshells around me afterwards and it made me feel worse. The babysitter I have now is my mom's friend and I know she'll tell my mom if I ask her to watch my son outside of me working. I've looked for places that offer childcare but there doesn't seem to be any offices around here that do. I feel like my only option is to wait till August when he starts school but I don't want to wait that long, I'm afraid I'll convince myself not to go.

Does anyone know if there are places that have some kind of child care while you're going to counseling and if so how to find them?

I don't know that stuff, but if I were you I'd drop the idea that I was seeing someone. As in, a guy. Or else a dietician, or a podiatrist. Just think of a specialist or someone who you could go to.

I totally agree with you not telling them the truth. You have a right to privacy. What would be perfect, in a perfect world, is your babysitter not asking where you were going. That would be manners, that would.

No one needs to know that you are going to counseling while you have someone babysit. Tell the person you have errands to run, that you need to stay late at work, that you're meeting a friend, or whatever.

I actually own a day care center here in New York. Just Google ""Day Care Centers in ----------" Put your zip code in the blank. It should give you a bunch of them. You might be able to work with some of them to give you the days and hours that you need.

I wish your family was more supportive, but understand your past history. The idea of telling your standing babysitter that you are "working on your social life" may work. But at some point your family will find out. (perhaps 15 years from now, but still ... )

So perhaps a new neutral babysitter would be a good idea.

Thanks everyone. I was talking about needing a babysitter at work and one of the women I work with said her daughter is open for babysitting. I'm working out what times are good for her. I will tell my family I just want to wait till I know where I'm at and I'm getting help so they won't worry so much. I'm sure they mean well but I think it would go better if they see that I'm getting help first.

No one NEEDS to know you are getting medical care. None of their business unless you (are a or) in danger ... and then the doctor will take care of that. Tell 'em you are 'taking classes', ... or whatever.
