Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Some of us have been dealt a crappy hand and we feel so out of control of our own lives and circumstances. I feel so lost lately and I know that I don't have total control of what my life has become but I do have some control. I can control what music I listen too (upbeat music), I can control what TV program I watch or what I choose to browse on the internet. I can choose what water temperature I can take a shower with and what clothes I want to put on after that shower. I can choose to put one foot in front of the other and get out of bed and put on my sneakers and take a walk (Yes, I put the rest of my clothes on too... yikes!) or do some push ups or jog in place until I'm winded. We have so much control over our lives and what influences are thoughts that we don't even realize.
Sometimes when we feel this low we have to scale back our thoughts and think of just these things. Get excited about something that seems trivial, like a favorite tv show (comedy always helps me) or putting on clothes that make us feel attractive or doing our hair and just focus on that - not allowing any negative thoughts to creep in. (smack yourself if they do!....NOT that hard!!)xD Something, anything that makes us feel good because when we feel good, we look positive and when we look positive people want to be around us. I know it sounds easier said than done but I do this on my lowest days and it does help to change my perspective on life.
Another tip my grandmother told me once, she said to get at least one thing productive done everyday, outside of work and normal routines and finish it. For example, clean out your closet, clean out the fridge, the pantry, organize your sock drawer... just one thing everyday and it will make you feel like you accomplished something... not to mention your socks will be color coordinated the next time you want to put on your sneakers and go for a walk. :)
Sending you a big hug. "This too shall pass."
