I've been scratching instead of cutting

I think so. I normally scratch myself until there's a bruise or mark when I try to make myself stop cutting.

Depends on what your intention is. Are you trying to hurt yourself?

Yes, I think so. Try an alternative. My daughter does this and tell her this...."Hurting your self isn't a solution, wont make anything better and now not only does your mind hurt so does your body...kinda dumb when you think about it. I tell her while she's in school grab a piece of paper and write out anything you want or feel...Mrs. Smith is bitch, I hate Jane Doe, math F'n sucks, etc./whatever, it's private. Verbalize yourself letting it out, take some deep breaths and then rip up the paper, rip it to shreds, visualize and try to feel the relief you get from scratching/cutting (transference). When at home if you need to be more physical go scream into a pillow, punch it and lay on your bed and flail if you need to...never physically hurt yourself too!" Best of luck!!

I consider scratching to be self-harm. Have you considered an alternative to harming yourself. I found this list of 15 Ways To Distract Yourself From Cutting - http://info.thehopeline.com/cutting-distract - helpful. I’ve been there and I know what it’s like to struggle with scratching and cutting. I know the feeling of it not “working” anymore and wanting to cut deeper. Please consider talking to someone about your struggle with scratching.

It doesn't matter. Behind every mark is pain and agony leading a person to want to hurt themselves. It doesn't matter if it's a deep, bleeding knife cut, or a small, red, scissor bruise. I've done both in my life, sometimes in the same week. Anything you are intentionally doing to harm or cause bodily harm I count as selfharm or selfingury. Be careful.
