I (as everyone probably knows) am not a doctor, but "classic' schizophrenia is known to be quite well managed with medication. Without medication, it is a very serious problem. Also, there is CHRONIC schizophrenia (probably for life) and ACUTE schizophrenia (which can last only a relatively short time). You could ask her which she thinks it might be.

You follow your doctors 'orders', and you should be fine.

I think it scares anyone and everyone who is actually diagnosed with a disorder. I see someone in feb about my meds, and I'm scared too that they are going to tell me that I have something more than Depression. Even when I go to counseling, I dont even want to walk in the door because I'm scared of what they have to say, and it just makes me face my disorder more.

there is no diagnostic test for schizoaffective disorder. what your diagnosis means is that your symptoms, as you described them to your doctor, match the definition of schizoaffective disorder in the DSM.

so, if you think about it that way, a diagnosis itself isn't scary, you already knew about your symptoms. and because your doctor is familiar with your set of symptoms and treatments, it's only good news. :)

I did a quick look at DSM IV and found no reference to a test for SA.

It did say "Treatment typically involves medication to treat both the psychotic and affective symptoms. Therapy can be helpful in terms of increasing interpersonal skills, insight into the illness and need for medication. Assistance with occupational issues can also be beneficial."

and

"medication has been shown to be quite effective against the psychotic symptoms and therapy can help the individual cope with the illness better and improve social functioning. Absence of what is termed the negative symptoms (flatted affect, avolition, and poor social interaction) improves the prognosis significantly".

It's always scary to find out you have a mental illness. I have been diagnosed as schizoaffective as well and what I found out about that diagnosis from one of my doctors is that sometimes depression can be so severe that it begins to create psychosis. Well, for me I was able to accept that. I don't like it of course but then again who would?
And it's just a diagnosis. It doesn't define who you are. You are first of all and above everything else a human being and that's what really matters. {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}

you know ..im going to take the meds and stuff...but when the meds start working and the voices go away..im so scared that ill be truly alone...theyre always here with me no matter wat..that scares me

Maybe you could change the voices to your own voice, and share your experience to guide others?
