Hello all:
It's been a while since I've been on here and I feel bad that I only come here when something is wrong. Physically I'm typically not doing so well, but I tend to deal with it quite well, with a good dose of humor. Emotionally, it's a different story. A couple of days ago I was dealt a blow that I don't know how I will recover from.
Jacob, my best friend of nearly five years, which evolved into a romantic relationship this March, broke up with me. I am devastated.
We met as potential boyfriends, but things quickly evolved into a best friends relationship, but not after having a physical relationship for a short while. Four years pass and he mentions that he wants to be "friends with benefits". After some brief hesitation, I agree. This is all well and good until my feelings for him once again emerge. I fall in love, and we fall into a boyfriend relationship. I know that he wasn't in love with me, but did love me.
Now he says he can't do this anymore and want to be just best friends again. I'm devastated. Of course I still want to be best friends. A part of me wants to ask if we can go back to "friends with benefits", but I think he'll say no, and that's it's probably not the best idea anyhow.
I would give more details, but they're lengthy and not necessarily essential at this point. I just want to know how best to handle this. I'm constantly sleeping, hardly eating, and trying to distract myself as much as possible. I've lightly cried, but because of some medication I am unable to to really have a heavy cry.
He has said that there's no one else in the picture and that he's not interested in dating for some time now, or even having sex. This is in part due to him having some serious surgery very soon. I believe him.
I really think that right now I'm just in severe shock. I don't know what to say, what to do, etc. I have, however, been making a list of things I want to ask/discuss with him when we do get together to talk.
I should also mention that I've never been in love with someone like I am with him. I thought I was in love before, but no, not compared to Jacob. And when we were dating I have never been so happy in my entire life; and I told him this. Also, I was thinking that about a year from now I was going to ask him to marry me. I never told him this until the night he broke up with me.
To you, the kind and loving members here at DailyStrength, I'm not sure exactly what I'm asking for other than input, suggestions, advice, etc. Anything that might make things a little easier on me. I don't have many friends, so I don't have many people to talk to. Really, I only have one person I can talk to, and he's in another state, so we can't talk face to face.

I am sorry that this happened to you. I believe that giving Jacob sometime is the right thing to do. I understand that your heart is breaking and that you long for this relationship to continue but please do not put yourself out there as a selfish reason and get hurt again. You stated that you were in love and he wasn't in love with you, honey that is a hard place to be in, and to even know it. I send you my prayers and hope that your heart mends quickly.
