Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I don't know what to do anymore.
I'm 21 years old; I'm a nursing student; and I have major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, tendency to self-harm (non-suicidal), and eating disorder behaviors.
On Friday morning, I got very suicidal. I just wanted to mix Xanax and alcohol and be done with it. I know I have so much to live for and I have such a beautiful life to live, but my mental illnesses just ruin things. My happiness has been very much fleeting over this past month--I have been really struggling to get out of bed, I've missed classes, I have insomnia, I cry almost every day, and I forget to eat. Basically, I am incapable of taking care of myself right now. I can't think of a specific trigger for this. My great aunt passed away about the time my depression really cranked itself up, but my aunt and me weren't super close.
I've been meeting with my therapist every week as I have been for over a year. I also reached out to my psychiatrist regarding my suicidality on Friday. I am currently on 100 mg of Zoloft. He tole me to increase the dose to 150 mg to see if that helps, so I will be starting that tomorrow.
I am currently trying to study for an exam tomorrow but I just don't care enough and I keep crying. I already emailed the professor basically saying that I will try my best to make it to class tomorrow, but no guarantees and that I may need to reschedule.
I am just sad about this whole situation because I've never been so severely depressed for such a long period of time where my interventions seem to not even be helping. I'll be happy when I'm hanging out with my sister, boyfriend, or friends, but that's easy because I have no responsibilities in that moment. And I sometimes get really depressed even when I'm just hanging out with them. This Friday I had a complete meltdown about wanting to die and needing to check myself into a hospital when I was with my boyfriend and nothing bad was happening. I didn't check myself into a hospital though.
I have an amazing support system of family and friends, yet I still feel so isolated because no one can fix me.
