Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I have been treated for depression for over 10 yrs. Just this past September 2015, I lost my husband of 36 yrs. to cancer. While I often wish I could die to be with him, the thought of suicide doesn't really come to mind. Will my existing depression always keep me grieving? The pain is just awful. I am going to counseling and I am on the same meds with just an increase in them. I get anxious thinking I will never get through this grieving. I have heard of people who can't get through grieving and have become depressed. But, I have no knowledge of anyone who is clinically depressed and who is also suffering the loss of a spouse. If anyone can offer advice, I would be most grateful.

I recently heard a great 2007 song the other day, "Falling Slowly" because it popped up in my newsfeed, accompanied by the sad news that the male singer, Glen Hansard, just died in a motorcycle accident. I learned that the song won an award and was featured in an indie movie called Once. I just watched it, and it's really good. They made it in 3 weeks on a $100,000 budget. It's streaming on...

But the point I am trying to make is I bounced back, just as you will bounce back. The pain is just greater now because you are dealing with the loss as of recent, but time will heal you enough to keep on truckin eventually, I promise. I am sorry that I can not speak from the perspective of loosing a spouse, but thats because I never had one, much less a real date.
But don't give up hun, try to hold on, I know you can do it, I have faith in you. Please do this for me will you? Just hold on, its going to be ok, I promise.
I HAVE AN IDEA WHAT U R GOING THRU, SWEETIE.

I have experienced grief because someone died. I practically worshipped my grandfather, looked up to him and wanted to be just like him. He died 16 years ago when I was 16. I still miss him. I talk to him like he's here sometimes. I will always miss him. That never goes away.
But like another poster said there is a grieving cycle with stages of grief. And you don't go through each stage just once, at least not usually. This just happened. It will take time to deal with such a significant loss.

Be kind and patient with yourself and know that your feelings are normal. You may want to seek out a support group for bereavement. Call your local hospital info line. They may have some groups or other resources.
I think you are doing the right thing in continuing with your therapy sessions and following your doctor's advice regarding the medication. On top of that, do you have a personal support system that you could reach out to -- family, friends or church members in the area? Even if they don't have a similar grief situation, they might still be able to offer what they can to help you get through these dark days.
I don't know how long your grief will last or if your depression will complicate the process. I, truly, don't believe anyone could answer that question with any candor or accuracy since as individuals we have different pain thresholds and our emotional makeup is unique to us and reflects our own personal experiences.
There is a resource that comes to mind, that I would like leave with you in case you are interested. You can find it here: http://bit.ly/1VCI6ie.
Please know that I'm praying for you and trusting that God will see you through this. He is able.
