Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Fortunate people with working brain chemestries, feel that it's all a matter of choice. Because that's the way the world appears to them. They don't understand that you have to have a fully funtioning brainware system to be able to do that. Even then, life tends to happen, and get in the way of things.
A long time ago, I'm assuming A LOT of intensely traumatic events happened in your life, and what you thought (which was SO automatic) way back then are the thoughts that began the depression. Now that you are depressed, it's like a viscious cycle where your depression maintains itself through your negative thinking style, yet it was negative thinking that started it at a time in your life when you were vulnerable to what was going on around you.
Talk to your therapist about ALL of your thoughts, even when you were a little girl. Let the little girl talk about what you wanted from your mommy or daddy that you never got, talk about how you have always secretly felt about yourself as a result of not getting specific things you had always wanted. Talk about your needs. If you can let that little girl speak within you (in therapy), the healing will begin.
You said that your first earliest memories are negative, and I'm assuming that they have impacted you significantly. You can deal with the intensity of those events so that they are not so prominent in your everyday thinking by talking about how you felt at the time of that all happening. The little girl within you has been traumatized, and she needs to speak about her experience in order for you to soften up the intensity of how you feel today.
At the core of depression is loneliness and abandonment coupled with a sense of worthlessness, and all of this needs to be talked about at whatever stage of development you have experienced these things. The earlier you experienced it, the more of an impact it has had on you, yet do not be afraid to open up according to how old you were when you experienced it.
After that can happen, the sky will be the limit in terms of how much you can consciously control regarding your feelings. Doing the above will allow your feelings to catch up with your reality, and as an adult you will be able to excercise more of a conscious control over them.
God Bless You.
