My brother just got laid off this morning... He is a fully licensed plumber. He's called all his contacts in this city and no one has any work coming up, despite the fact that this is CALGARY and there is ALWAYS work here.... It's kinda scary, actually. A licensed plumber should never have to worry about unemployment....

I really hope his one contact pulls through that is trying to get him back onto his old jobsite.. but there are no guarantees. He'd butted heads with the general contractor on that job which is why he had left for the company he just got laid off from in the first place.. so it depends on whether or not this guy (who is a stubborn ass quebecer) will allow him back on site.... crossing my fingers!! Otherwise, he's totally screwed... everyone I know who has had to rely on EI since this recession began has had to wait anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks for their first cheque to come in.....

Yes, he is eligible for EI.. but EI is a real hassle these days. Most people I know who are getting EI had to jump through hurdle after hurdle to get it, and most waited upwards of 6 to 8 weeks before a check came in! So, yes he will be applying for EI.. but it would be far more preferable that he find work immediately.
We've searched every online job bank - the canadian govt jobbank service, abjobs.ca, careerbuilder, monster... there are 3 jobs listed in his field! Insane!! But everyone knows that most jobs are not advertised.. so we're trying to stay optimistic. It just really sucks that this had to happen right before Christmas... I am in a really bad financial situation myself right now - my student loan has STILL not come in, and I have less than a month's rent left on my credit card. And I've only been working about 8 hrs a week because I have too much schoolwork to do. The rest of our family is back east.. so it's just the two of us together over the holidays. We really wanted to be able to do something special, but with him being unemployed and me not knowing how I am going to pay my next months rent.. we're kind of screwed there. I know that what matters most is that we are together.. but ya know what.. I was really looking forward to blowing some cash on a box of lego, and cooking a dinner that isn't totally cheap.....

Ok.. so that's the end of my pity party... Sorry bout that! It's just been a hard day...
