Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Second- it takes time and a lot of trial and error for you to find the right meds for you- and some give up before they find the right fit in favor of other tools.
Third- The medication I take- I couldn't tell that it did anything for me until I decided to stop taking it with the supervision of my doctor...... I KNEW without a doubt what it had been doing for me then- I describe it as it gives me a bottom- that's it. And frankly I think that's how the meds are supposed to work. I still feel all of my feelings- they just have a bottom now. I'm not numb, I'm not high- I'm just normal. When we get depressed we forget that sometimes you are supposed to feel sad, tired, angry, down, all those things- but we are. We need tools to learn how to handle those feelings before they turn to real honest depression.
Are you working with a gp or a pdoc for your meds? You need a pdoc who really listens and talks with you about what your needs/issues/side effects/problems are.
Unfortunately, I am one of those people for whom anti-depressants have limited effectiveness. Most of them are effective for about a year. So, when one stops working, I have to go on another one. It's very frustrating, because I usually feel bad for a couple of weeks while I am changing over. But once the new one kicks in, I feel like a regular person and can live my life.
There are many kinds of medicines available, and they have different effects. Don't discount them until you've worked with a doctor to find what helps you. Be aware, however, that medication alone won't do it.
I have been off the meds, the last one Cymbalta for about 2 months. I am going back to the Dr. on the 6th. I just cannot do this on my own.
It is a terrible battle every day sometimes just to hang on. No one understands unless they are going through the same thing. Not fun.
