And now it goes downhill.

I was doing good. I was doing GREAT. Finished college. Got a job. Looking at a second (better paying) job. Yesterday I got the call. "He's got lung cancer, CJ." my mom told me. First thing upon waking up. Dad's got lung cancer. I could lose my dad. I still don't feel anything, though. I'm still so numb inside. Shouldn't I be angry? Sad? SOMETHING? I don't now what to do. I don't know how to feel. I don't know how to cope. I just don't know. I can't lose him. He's everything. He didn't have to be my dad. He didn't have to be with my mom. He didn't have to treat us like his own. BUT HE DID. And if I lose him, I don't know what I'll do. I don't know if I can make it without him right now...

I can only imagine the worry you feel right now. Don't feel guilty that you haven't experienced a stronger emotion, yet. It will take time. Give yourself time to process the information.

I know that negative thinking is the nature of this depression beast, but do your best to consider that cancer isn't necessarily a death sentence. While undergoing cancer treatment is certainly a battle, the treatments are often effective. It's obvious he has people in his life that care deeply for him. That can make all the difference!

Try to stay positive, and reach out when you feel like it's becoming too much. I truly wish you and your father the best in all of this.

When my father died of lung cancer in1982 I was 20 years old young and dumb. When I excepted it I was graveside as they began to lower the casket into the ground. I fell into little pieces as it sunk in that this was for real. My one biggest regret is that I wasted what time we still had living in denial and just shutting down. Go to your father and talk to him! He needs you and you need him.
