Recently diagnosed with stress induced depression. Super low emotionally, racing thoughts, bad concentration, poor memory, anxiety, insomnia... the works. Was given Xanax 0.5 x2 and Cybalta. I did not take the Cymbalta since it was too expensive. It helped the anxiety and racing thoughts, but did nothing for the sleep, and the depression got worse. I wasn't keen on the way I felt on it, either.

I was just put on amitriptyline (Elavil) this week, 50mg at night. The first dose surprised me, I slept thru the night. I sleep much better now, maybe even too much. However, the depression and anxiety are still there.

Doc says it can take several weeks until that part of amitrptyline kicks in.
I'm trying not to use xanax anymore, but the doc says to use it if I have to, until the other med works.

Is there anyone here who can tell me how long it took for the amitiptyline to work for them for depression?
