Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
You may want to add a note in General Discussions that you are new here. Us members are quick to welcome new ones, but it seems (to me) that Off Topic Posts are not as active as the General Discussions.
You seem to be doing very well knowing how the supplements work and combine. Kudos!
No, our society doesn't understand mental illness real well. But I am glad to be in the US (for insurance reasons Canada or UK would be good) than in cultures like the Asian ones. Last week we had an interesting talk with a new member from Asia. It is a big shun there. I think Japan may be more progressive, though.
There are also free support groups in larger communities. But I am liking our group here. Been a member one week, not long, huh?.
I lost a very dear longtime friendship last month. She didn't like it that I canceled plans to go out all the time. I'm living a mostly solitary life. Going to the grocery store is hard for me. But I know she saw me as being rude to her by canceling.
If they haven't experienced it they don't understand. Or my friend understood and thought her life was too short to waste with a depressed friend like me. Some think that way. I forgave her and go on.
Anyway, you'll have a lot of fun here, and you will have fresh perspectives! Looking forward to your posts, Snail
I became depressed because something horrible happened to me on a job and my mind couldn't handle it. I then slipped into a severe depression and got help a month in. I got prescribed antidepressants and the therapist would only give me 15min after my initial visit, only to up my dosage and monitor how I was doing.Wasn't much talk or help on the issues I was facing at the time. I was too drained to find someone else but I've relapsed twice now and I'm on my way back up again. I've never really felt as stable until I started taking SAM-e. (I found it through research and a medical Dr. blog. Most medical information on the internet is rubbish lies, trying to sell you "miracle cures")
I think if I conquer it this time, I may conquer it for good.
If you dont know me as a person, I'm very much into science and various things like technology.
I feel my family isnt supportive of me. I don't exactly live in the best situation. I make the best of what I have. No, I dont have medical insurance; I cant afford it. I'm employed but my job is very light and gives me money here and there. I work 5-10hrs a week on my job usually. I try to make the best of my free time.
So that's a little bit about myself. I hope to find this experience to be a nice one.
You seemed like a very intelligent person right away. I study science as well. (Unfortunately, not technology. My Mac has me buffaloed.)
I was at the beginning of Pre-Pharmacy in my 40s and couldn't keep up with working fulltime and going to school nights. Actually, a cardiologist told me I had had a heart attack at some point. After an angiogram, she said she was wrong. I got a blood bruise from the angiogram at the injection site, couldn't work for a while, etc, etc. I never went back and feel ridiculously old to pursue any career now, plus we can't afford it.
I do read biology, histology, etc. And Civil War history.
You're young, I assume, with plenty of time to get strong and do whatever you want to do in life! That's a gift many waste.
Psychologists are the talkers, and much to our surprise, at first, psychiatrists are the prescriber of medicines. If you do well w/o pharmaceuticals, you are one step ahead of the game!
I'm sure you'll meet more people here. And the site is quiet today. Sunday, 9/11, and lovely weather in the midwest. Snail
You seem like a nice person. I'm grateful to be talking to someone who understands what I'm going through. It's not like you can choose to get out of it and be happy. I guess that's what a lot of people think, it seems. (that you can just get over it, when you cant)
So far I've got 2 people on my friends list (minus the default friend) and the welcome has been quite nice. It made me smile in fact. I'm glad that there's someone who truly understands.
Before I became depressed I was a very optimistic person who felt they could overcome even the toughest times in life. I was ambitious (but not foolish) about tackling my lifes goals and dreams. I've gotten some of that back so far and I'm glad there's hope for me.
My ultimate life dream was to help do good in the world, cause there doesn't seem to be enough of that. There's a lot of people who seemed to be focused on money, greed, and shallow things like vanity. (in a bad way of course)
Not many people seem to care where the things they take for granted come from. Things other people, in the world, don't normally have.
I'm going off on a tangent, but I'm very happy to meet you SnailAway.
Its nice to hear that there are other people that have dealt with people not understanding. I had a friend say to me "Well maybe if you didnt complain so much....." I dont remember the rest but she really hurt me that day.
There is so much stigma and misunderstanding about depression in general. There is a belief that someone can just snap out of it. If only it were that simple....
I wish I could show people what its like to be depressed, make them feel what I feel. Then maybe they would think twice about making ignorant comments.
Anyway, its nice to know that Im not the only one that has experienced that. Im sad that people are like that but ultimately, I have a grounded understanding that they have no idea what I go through and therefore I take comments like that with a grain of salt.
it is a beautiful Fall day here in my part of the world..i hope it is also for all of you too! Cat
