I am unemployed and looking for work. I have (modesty aside) a killer resume and a lot of talent.
I applied for a few jobs, gotten interviews, they love me, but no offer so far. There's this one job that had moved me to the advanced process of checking references. That's where the problem lies. In my last job I left in bad terms. That place was one of the worst places I've worked, but of course, they are not going to say that they are unprofessional, play dirty politics, favor people, sweep unethical practices under the carpet,and some staff have sex with clients. Not to mention how they manipulate their numbers to make it look like they are actually doing something.
Nope, they say that I am not a "team player" because I refused to join them in their disgusting unethical unprofessional practices.
The place asked for 5 references (typically they ask for 3), and 2 of them had to be managers. So I had no choice than to include my former unprofessional backstabbing disgusting POS scum bag of a manager I had in my last job (can you feel the love?).
It's good that I was able to put 3 other former coworkers from the same place that can give excellent references, but none of them are in management. The disgusting scumbag is in HR, so her word does have more weight (or so my negative thinking self thinks).
I want that job badly. It's doing something I love, in a place that it's a great place to work, and the pay is good. The interviews (I had 3 in one afternoon) was with a total of 8 people. I know that they are not going to spend so much time with me if they weren't interested.
The references are done online, and I thought that they were only the basic confirmation of dates, duties and not a lot more. But the online form asked 27 questions about my performance and other things. I can't see that scum bag saying anything good about me. Mine was a nasty departure, and they are vindictive, cult-like. I know that bitch is going to trash me, and I hope that the other 6 (I entered a total of 7 references) can make up for the negative reference.
I am avoiding feeling bad and at loss. But I feel that I made a mistake by including that scum bag in my references. That place is a bad place to work. They are bad people, they don't care and they do get away with a lot of stuff they do wrong.
I'm not interested in wining a law suit. I need a job.
The other prospects are ok. The problem with the other 2 places that interviewed me are that one pays a lot less (and I could spot the chaos in the place during the interview), and the other pays a lot but it's a 2-hr commute. I have to take 2 trains and a company shuttle, and the place is in the middle of nowhere. So if they need me to stay over (and for a fabulous salary I doubt they're going to want just a 9-5 person). So the location of the other place is an issue. I'm willing to take it.
I feel like I am paying a price for having a sense of integrity and for making the mistake of trying to maintain a good work ethics in that bad place. I hate this feeling of not knowing what the scum bag put in that form, and the fear of losing a great opportunity because of them.
I feel good sharing about it here instead of taking it all in and acting it out in unhealthy ways.

If it's meant to happen, it will. When you imagine a 2 hour a day commute, it's doable, but after a few weeks of it, you might really regret it, especially if it involves taking 2 trains.

Just want to follow up on this. As I expected I got a bad recommendation from the bad manager. Never mind that I did 13% over what I was supposed to deliver, got promoted and managed a team of 6 people for three years successfully.
However, none of what she had to say mattered much. The place where I applied for the job seemed to obtain a whole picture of me based on all the references, not just this one bad one.
SO I GOT THE JOB!!!! I am ecstatic! Seems like I'm going to have a great start for 2015.
I got an offer today and the hiring manager did give me a little lecture about the bad reference, addressing that according to her I'm not a "team player". The HR person said that none of that came across when they interviewed me and that it was only one of the references who made a negative comment about me.
The truth is that I did have many good things on my favor, and that the place seems to have its act together. I love it already! The place seems so professional, innovative and caring for maintaining a good working environment. So different from the chaotic places I have worked before.
Anyway, thank you to all of you who read my anxious rant. Sharing here gave me hope and eased the anxiety and worry.
I am sending an email to all the references thanking them, including the bad one, especially the bad one. I want them all to know that I got the job.
it is unfortunate that there are so many bad managers, it has always seemed to me that the best people should be made managers, but in my experience this is not usually the case. thankfully, you have enough going for you to overcome this crappy manager.
