I just wanted to let everyone know that hubby's paycheck came in yesterday and the electricity bill was paid off.
We are still struggling financially, but things are improving.
We are completely up to date with our rent, but our landlord still will not maintain his property.
For years now, only one burner on the stove works, the bathroom sink doesn't work, we rarely get hot water, there are rats in the walls, etc.
All though we can pay for necessities, we are very limited in what we can pay for, which is very stressful as I can rarely pay to see a band perform or even so much as have some leftover money to go to the cafe.
Hubby is asking me to help out in managing the money, so hopefully that will work out.
Last weekend, there were two murders just blocks from my home. This makes where I get to go and walk to rather limited. Some places that I used to enjoy going to are now scratched off of my list because of this. They supposedly are going to retaliate by putting a cop on every corner, but they already drastically cut funding for cops. Typical Baltimore.
I am getting a lot done with the current song that I am working on, and I can tell you that this particular track sounds AWESOME! Still, I have been really down about my music as I am constantly getting negative reviews. All of my songs are on garageband.com and basically I am a 2 star musician. In other words, I suck.
I have finished sketching the next painting I am going to do, but I can't afford paints so HOPEFULLY I have enough in stock to do this one.
My mother is driving me nuts and constantly have been begging me to do a charcoal sketch of my father for her. I have not done a portrait in fifteen years and this is stressing the hell out of me. I had no intention of doing this drawing, but she won't drop it so I have no choice.
On a more humorous note, Oscar has decided that he is not going to tolerate the gate we put up separating him from the kitchen. It has been up for two years without incident, but all of a sudden Oscar has decided that enough is enough. He has learned to dislodge the hatch by whacking the underneath of the door with his paw. And, when that doesn't work, he just bulldozes the whole thing over. Yes, he is that big and powerful.
Every night, Oscar wakes up my husband with his banging. And, I am really surprised that he hasn't killed him by now.
The first time he got back there, he ate the garbage as he always had in the past and projectile vomited all over my shoes.
Hubby thought it was like something out of Ren And Stimpy and laughed his ass off.
I was less than impressed.

You are lucky to have a supportive husband, wish I had one now. Been alone way too long.
He works his butt of 24/7. He just has a boss that not only cut everyones salary, but also doesn't make payroll every week.
Although it hasn't happened to my husband, apparently some of the other departments paychecks have bounced.

I understand very well your apprehension about attempting a portrait.
Perhaps remind your mom that it's been awhile since you've done something like this---and offer to do a few of them, and let her pick her favorite.
Practice doing some sketches and loosening up by doing the cats, your husband, first---? Give yourself permission to be a little rusty, work it out a little at a time, hon.
I've also found it helps to refresh my lessons by pouring over some master drawings at the library. They are timeless and gentle teachers. Drawings are still the basis for all pictorial art---might as well take a few refreshers from the big guys.
People tend to think of artists as candy machines; we are supposed to dispense delights on demand. Since it is your parents, and I know what those expectations are like, give yourself every advantage and try and have some fun with it. It's probably her way of keeping you "going".

I don't personally know of any off the top of my head for the US.. but I am sure they are out there.
I did a few little temp from-home freelance jobs for extra cash a while back, and my cousin does it all the time out of plain boredom because there are no jobs where she lives (her hubby is an RCMP officer so he makes enough to support them and their kid)
