These are not attempts at suicide I think they are a desperate cry for help, relief from pain linked to borderline personality disorder and depressive disorders.
The first recognized instances were in the war where the term used was Self Inflicted Wounds soldiers would shot themselves in the foot, leg, arm anywhere they were sure that the wound would not be fatal. There reason was to get away from the trauma of war.
Therefore all of the above are a deliberate injury self inflicted upon themselves with out suicidal intent it is aimed at relieving unbearable emotions caused by some trauma.
It is a prolonged maladaptive reaction to exposure to a traumatic event from the past.
A common form of self-harm involves making shallow cuts to the skin of the arms, legs, chest, breasts or any where on the body and this is referred to as Cutting S.I.-S.H.-S.I.V.-S.I.B. is only limited by the suffers imagination for example:
Punching themselves or things, hitting, scratching, self-biting (Hands, Limbs, Lip, Tongue or any part of the body they can reach); picking wounds, or sutures, burning, cigarette burns; Insertion damage (wire, pins, nails, pens, knives etc) Ingestion damage
(Swallowing; corrosive chemicals, batteries, pins and medicine tablets mild overdoses)
Self-harm may be an indicator of depression and / or other psychological problems.
It is worth knowing that whilst self-harm is not a failed or half-hearted suicide attempt there is no non-casual correlation between self-injury and suicide it is a compulsion.
While self-harming behaviors may seam alarming and appear dangerous, for most of the people engaged in cutting, SI-SH-SIV-SIB serves a purpose, allowing them some degree of control over there feelings; shame, self-worth, depression symptoms
