Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I really like this definition of depression: "It is a problem of chronic brain overload. The key is to understand that the brain, just like all the other organs in the body, has a limited processing capacity, and if you constantly exceed it, disease will ensue."
May sound silly, but this concept is a revelation to me. If there are stages -- at least for some of us -- then there is a way to measure progress; even when things are bleak, we can see that we're moving through it and not just stagnating.
What other stages have you noticed are part of a depressive episode for you?
