I have an ADHD family member, 11 yr old boy, whom I have written about before. For the past six weeks he has been having mood swings. His mother is finally getting into a doc this week. He had me real worried though. I thought it might be his meds, as he doesnt want to take them. But last night he had another swing and was rude to me, my house and wanted to die. He even wrote that he thought his life was worthless. He had a lot of anger towards me and during bedtime prayer he hit me hard across the face. He did go to bed without a sleeping pill at 11:30, early for him not being in school. This morning he was fine and happy. His aunt and I were thinking depression, but Ive had depression. I dont remember wanting to die one moment and being happy the next, dont you stay depressed?
His step dad is abusing him and he is having trouble knowing who to trust, I have only been in his life six months, the step father 8 years. He knows I love him, but the step father lies about me. Now his mother is trying to recruit him to steal some family papers from me. What a mess. I know it is complicated, but is it ADHD, life or depression? Any advice?

Only a doctor can make a diagnosis as to what is going on with the lil guy but it sounds to me like he is developing a personality issue or a bi polar problem. You are right, normal depression usually do not involve them wild mood swings.
I also have to add something. The situation with step dad has to stop if there is any chance at all for the lil guy to have a normal life. If it takes police involvement, so be it. If he is abusing the lil guy, all the medicines and doctors will not be able to help while he is being abused.
Now saying that be sure he goes to the doctor and make sure that the doctor is told about his being suicidal. I can tell you my son did the same thing at the age of 8 and we changed doctors so many times it was not funny till I found one who would listen to what was going on and get us the help we needed.
the boy's behavior is poor because his parents screwed him up. the whole family needs work.
Only point out the good things he does...dont focus on the bad. Let me know how this works.
