I do see your post was written a while back. I just joined. I have several family member with depression and can relate to what you are saying.
You can explain to people why you are so tired. My wife and I have never hidden her depression and we make sure our family and friends understand the impact it has on us. It can be hard, so many people just don't understand, but it's important to educate them. We all need support and that means friends and family understanding and listening to us.
Sometimes you just have to accept that you might live in a mess for a little while. Even without surgery, I'm sure there's been times when you are just too emotionally and physically exhausted to pick up the slack. That's ok. We can forgive ourselves for not being superheroes 24/7.
If you have not already, get him back on his prescribed dose.
