Dementia Support Group
Dementia is the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be expected from normal aging. Particularly affected areas may be memory, attention, language and problem solving, although particularly in the later stages of the condition, affected persons may be disoriented in time, place and person (not knowing who they...
I found myself collecting notepads and, 'putting them away'...but forgetting where. (Actually, I was collecting them for the reasons most of us do...only my brain can no longer judge well how many are too many. (My BRAIN has increasing difficulty discerning things such as this--I personally don't believe it has anything to do with outside influences from my past).
As a result I had quite a stockpile of pads, yet would become quite anxious if paper to write on was not immediately within my field of vision. I live alone and this was gently pointed out to me by a visiting friend.
I try now to use my computer to catch my daily needs to communicate my cognition difficulties and incidents on. I'm grateful that I'm still self-functional and only require minimal assistance in home to get along without too much fuss. At this point in my life personal independence is vital for me.
It's becoming harder for me to express myself outward to people. I'm far more verbally communicative with TV characters and, as with all dementia, my ability to contemplate myself and the outside world I live in with any kind of sound judgement, seems to just fade away as time goes by. What a trip!
I guess I just wanted to add the perspective of someone who lives inside herself with symptoms of dementia every day. (I did have to write a paper note (in BIG RED LETTERS) to myself to stick on the computer to remind myself to write a note every day on the computer! :-/ By the way, I need to have lights on in every room day and night..except bedtime. Darkened corners and shadows cause me to become anxious, fretful and confused within my self. Yet, when I'm driving at night I have no problem whatsoever. In fact, I get my deepest peace and highest sense of cognitive awareness when I'm driving my car. Thank God!
Peace be to all of us, LoisJean
