I've come to the conclusion that no matter how angry, frustrated, sad, lost or forgetful she get's, she is my mum, and she loves me just as much as I love her. Dementia is such a cruel, hurtful disease, it's not fair and it hurts not only the patient, but families and friends. I look at my mum and it breaks my heart knowing there is nothing I can do to make her better, but I promise I will love her more and more everyday and even when she has forgotten me, I will continue to love her just as she has loved me

Another forum that I would strongly suggest you join is Caring for Aging Parents. There are a lot of great folks out there that are and have gone through this process for many years. You'll get some much needed support and advice there also.

Teesha-Yes, PLEASE do love her and continue to be there for her. Dementia and Alzheimer's is very cruel. My mother had Dementia (mild but very noticeable). We fought about various things, argued over and over about her meds and she even raised a hand to hit me. Our relationship was strained. I eventually had to put her in a nursing home. She was mad at me and blamed me continuously. After about 1 1/2 years, she started calming down but her health was deteriorating. We fought less and laughed more. We've had some good times (along with some not so good times). These past couple of months has been hard because of her health. Christmas Eve, my brother, husband and I had a good lunch with her. She enjoyed her lunch and her presents. We had a good time. I prayed with her and she said the sinners prayer and I anointed her with oil. She got saved. But on 12/31 she passed away. However frustrated you get, how tired you get or how much you want to give up the fight, don't give up. Love her and tell her you love her as much as you can. Spend time with her like it's her last day. Hugs for you as you go through this.
