Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.
I had a doppler ultrasound in anticipation of going off coumadin at the end of April. The tech told me she saw "bits and pieces" of the clot still there. She also told me the original clot had been big, from high in my pelvis all the way down my leg in my femoral vein.
I assume this will mean I won't go off coumadin quite yet? I feel pretty disappointed...
Given how high up the original DVT was, should I be wearing a different kind of support stocking? I have knee high, mid-thigh, and whole leg stockings, all of which have their drawbacks.

I lined up a hematologist, a GP, and a vascular specialist in an effort to get a clean bill of health 11 months post PE. I was planning to leave Warfarin and yank out a vena cava filter.
The hematologist found Factor V Leiden Het mutation. His CT found traces of chronic PE. I went for another doppler and was told that my leg clots, though old, would normally qualify a referral to the ER. In the span of less than a week I went from near-elation to the prospect of a life on Warfarin. Nonetheless, I heard what I needed to hear even if it was not what I wanted to hear.
Generally, presence or absence of residual clot determines cessation or continuation of anticoagulant therapy. I hope you have already been tested for genetic blood mutations, especially Factor V and Factor II, which my hematologist was able to test while on warfarin.
There have been several threads on compression socks, but I remember finding one going back to about February of this year, either here or the PE group. It mentioned that even if your clot is/was in the upper leg, the knee high variety may suffice since the calves act as the "pump" to move blood up the leg. Per the usual, your doctor has the final say.
Is Factor V the same as Factor 8? I think I had a blood test after my brain surgery (19 vials of blood!) to test for what I thought was Factor 8, but there have been no results yet. That was 6 months ago.
