Study about bridging

I saw this article in my local paper yesterday. It reports on a study that sheds doubt on the wisdom of "bridging" before medical procedures for those of us on warfarin.

It is an interesting read, although I will note that (1) they don't suggest what should be done instead of bridging and (2) this study focuses on patients with low to moderate risk for blood clots and I'm not sure how many lifers really fall into this category. I was also surprised at how many patient in the study did bridging (only 555 out of 1812) since I really thought it was standard practice.

The new anticoagulants (e.g. Rivaroxaban, eg,, brand name Xarelto) are so quick acting that there is no need for bridging. Warfarin takes about 4 days to be fully effective (much longer half life than e.g xarelto and heparin), thus bridging with fact acting anticoagulats is needed.

I cannot rely comment on this study as I they provide the reference to the original article.

that study,ive seen..I had a blood clot 6" long busted off went to my lung..in 2000.im on warfarin for life..im I at very high risk for a DVT, I have 2 negative blood proteins.im having a endo scope the 16th.i drop my thinner the 10th..well what im getting, at you have a high chance for blood clotting, then again you have a risk for bleeding from heparin. me my endo scope isn't invasive even if they do a biopsy..I even have a greenfield filter in my venous, when I had my tkr..my thing I had a DVT they hurt really bad..I see it safe to bridge my loveanox 80mg every 12 hrs.. There are other anticoagulants,im sure there ok. but I also know these both saved my life. Oh there's a lot more to that article..I didn't read it all.
