Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.
I'm now off coumadin, without explanation, but with the blessing of the senior hematologist at the hospital. I'll be wearing compression stockings forever, but wonder when I'll be able to fly safely? The doppler ultrasound showed marked improvement of my pelvis to ankle DVT, but still some unresolved clotting.
How will I know when it's safe to fly - this would be a flight of several hours, from Western Canada to the Dominican Republic.

Most would agree that wearing compression socks is advisable. www.airhealth.org advises sliding the feet fore and aft while seated, in addition to getting up every hour. Assuming no severe SOB, the cabin pressure O2 density is comparable to elevation 10000ft / 3080m. If you can drive a car into the rockies then there should be no problem with the thinner air. There was a thread several weeks ago about arranging in-flight oxygen if needed.
I have periodically seen the advisement for Lovenox as a prophylaxis for those with a clotting history. If Arixtra is deemed suitable then that would be one less injection per day.
Getting on a plane can seem scary, especially for those whose thrombo events originated on flights. However, at some time one must get back on the horse lest the world be small.
Last I knew, you could rent a car in the DR if you had a driver\'s license from the continent. It was an even more interesting place with a side trip into the interior, once accustomed to their driving habits and traffic lights that stop working with the power outages.
