Home Testing

Now that I will become a lifer, I am wondering if I should go the "home testing" route. I realize it's very expensive initially but the thought of having blood taken from my hand for the rest of my life sickens me.
Does anyone here do home testing?
If so, what home monitoring device do you use.
Found one that is called Coaguchekxs pt/inr meter.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I plan on starting home testing this fall. The ATU Clinic at my hospital started a formal home testing program since my last DVT. I have to wait 90 days, then attend a 2hr class to get started. The program is a bit more affordable, though. The coaguchek unit is a loaner, so I don't have the upfront cost of a unit. I pay $180 for the class, then $137 a month for supplies and pharmacist interpretations for a weekly test. I am excited, as it will help me feel more in control.

I am on Medicare and I have additional medigap insurance.
I called them this morning to ask about home inr monitoring.
They were very helpful. They have 3 companies that they deal with. I also have to wait 90 days, take a class, etc etc.
The good news is that the device is a rental and I'm not sure if or how much I might have to pay. The rep from the insurance company said there was no co-pay because it's considered lab work.
That sounded like good news to me.

That sounds perfect, Brooklin!! I love that these are the things that get us excited! Seriously, I was psyched when I found out I would be able to do home testing!! Ha! :-P

I've done the home testing for 3-4 years now and it makes life SO much easier, especially when traveling or dealing with being sick.

My machine is a CoaguChek and I've found it reliable within .1 or .2 of arm draw results.

For me, my insurance covers everything (machine, monitoring, supplies) as long as I go through the CoaguChek people themselves. I do wind up testing weekly this way, but it isn't much of an inconvenience when it only takes five minutes.

Definitely a great idea if you're going to be a lifer!
