Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. I have APS and FVL. Three drs have recommended I stay on anticoagulants indefinitely. Coumadin is inexpensive and the blood checks are a very minor inconvenience. But sometimes, I think maybe I'll go off coumadin. If I clot again, then I'll stay on. The drs say you might not get a second chance. They are right.
This week a family friend died suddenly from a clot. She decided to go off coumadin to save some money while she was between jobs. She did this against her dr's recommendation for indefinite treatment. She thought she would be fine or if she clotted again she would just go back on coumadin. She didn't get that chance. Saturday morning, she was getting ready to go looking for wedding dresses with her daughter, and then... she was dead. There was no warning.
I'm not posting this to scare those of you who have a temporary cause for your clot. If the reason for your clot is gone, you don't need to stay on anticoagulants forever. But those of you whose drs are recommending indefinite treatment, they have their reasons and you should take them seriously. Even when taking the meds seems so bad, sometimes not taking them is much worse.

Could you share with us why your friend was supposed to be on anticoagulants indefinitely?
I may be facing this decision soon and would greatly appreciate any information you could give me.
