I thought of posting my experience throughout the previous 2 years
In mid March 2014, I was going through really hard times, I was not eating or drinking water that much. In mid April 2014, I felt pan in my back that went down gradually and 2 days later my leg got massively sworn. I did not want to go the hospital at that time so I just stayed in my bed. The next morning the pain in my leg is just intolerable and I felt dizzy and felt something in my chest.
I called the ambulance and was taken to the hospital. I was diagnosed with Massive DVT in my left leg that caused many clots to go up to my pelvic area and my lungs that caused massive PE. I literally was crying from my leg's pain so I asked my doctor to do something. She said if you want you can do a thrombolysis and I accepted without hesitation.
I have gone through it and I could see results right after the surgery. I was put on xarelto. My leg is almost completely normal a few weeks after and I can walk any distance without any problem.
I also got into some bad habits after the incident like smoking a packet of cigarettes every day and I did not go for a follow up with my doctor and after a year I stopped xarelto myself. I am Ok but I know I should go see my doctor soon.

What did the doctors suggest the cause of your DVT and PE was?
I assume that you are off anticoagulation now. Have you been checked for underlying genetic clotting factors? This would involve finding a hematologist which would examine your blood to check if you have some genetic mutations that promote clotting. Many people have some mutations that promote clotting, and for many people they do not promote clotting while for other people they do. Dehydration can cause DVT/PE but it needs to be very excessive (e.g. in areas where there is shortage of drinking water in war zones). I do not know if lack of food can promote clotting.
Have you be checked for may-Thurner syndrome? The fact that you got your DVT in your left leg, then it could be a good idea to check this out.
Im glad that your thrombolysis went so well. After such massive DVT, and also with PE, your recovery (presumably thanks to the tthrombolysis) has been very rapid.
Anyway,these are naturally cliches, but I strongly suggest that you start to think about healthy lifestyle and quit smoking. Smoking may actually as well promote clotting (although not a very important risk factor).
From now onwards you need to be very careful not to reclot again. If you need to be hospitalised and or in cast, demand blood- thinner (e..g heparin (lovenox), or xarelto). Perhaps it would be good idea to take baby aspirin every day. Again, I would suggest you to check out your blood for clotting factors. If this analysis shows a mutation that was highly likley to have caused your DVT/PE, perhaps a life-long anticoagulation treatment is the best option, considering the seriousness of your DVT/PE and considering that your DVT/PE was not caused by hospitalisation or lower leg cast.

In terms of the cause, everything was checked and nothing was found except that my doctor is suspecting Thurner syndrome you mentioned and they have placed a stent.
