I have started taking vit D in capsule form It is oil based so hopefully that will take care of absorption
I have not seem any sunlight in London for the last four months, So levels may be low.
Q. Since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, is the supplement I take with my low-fat breakfast being absorbed? I eat half a grapefruit, shredded wheat with banana, nonfat yogurt and nonfat milk.
A. âYes, so long as you continue to include the yogurt and milk,â said Dr. Sheldon S. Hendler, co-editor of the âPDR for Nutritional Supplements,â the standard reference in the field.
Vitamin D binds to certain proteins as well as to fats, Dr. Hendler said by e-mail, and yogurt and milk fill the bill. These are the same proteins that bind to vitamin D in D-fortified nonfat milk, he said. D supplements are well absorbed when accompanied by foods rich in oils, including fatty fish like salmon and tuna and olive oil dressings.
âTypically,â he said, âa generous splash of olive oil would be enough to promote good absorption.â
There is wisdom in including healthy fats even in a low-fat diet, he said. âAlthough fats typically are thought of negatively (e.g., trans fats), there are some that are truly healthy and that may decrease the risk of cardiovascular and other degenerative diseases,â he said. âThese include the omega-3 fish oils DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid); the omega-3 plant fats such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found in flaxseed oil; olive oil; and phytosterols and phytostanols, derived from plants, which are known to lower cholesterol levels.â

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Lizzy do you feel the D has helped you? Vernon raved about this and I had never taken it before? Just wondering
I take calcium and b12 at night, it relaxes you and lets you fall asleep. Now I need something to stay asleep!!
But I also agree that some is mental I mean isn't everything.
Recently, research also suggests vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.
Rickets and osteomalacia are classic vitamin D deficiency diseases. In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, which results in skeletal deformities. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in addition to weak bones.
All us cat's get the D we need from fish
I am the Newbie here....was dx less than 24 hours ago. Here's a question. What does a Lactose intoerant person like me do to supplement all the milk products suggested in the 'diet'....oh....and I am an old geezer (55) with all my lady bits gone due to continuing endometriosis.......I am a perfect candidate for all kinds of things.
Any suggestions gladly accepted.
Eating fish and seafoods is wonderful for you and meat of course. Yogurt is also good but you need to find sugar free or use plain and add sugar free jellie. Vegetables like brocolli, bok-choy, kale, collard greens are right up your alley. I don't drink much milk anymore and I am older then you!! I have a friend who is lactose intolerant and he eats a lot of fish and bok-choy and greens I mentioned above as they are allowd in your food group for LI.
I don't have that much knowledge about other foods that are lactose free. But maybe others here do.
Are you a Diabetic one or two? Just ask what ever you need to know we will be happy to help, you outwith any questions.
You are not old here LOL.. we are an oldster group, I think!
Personally, I have milk during the day, but a lot of the diabetics dont, because there is sugar in milk. It doesnt really bother my bs, but it does bother some. I guess you cant have yogurt, cheese, how about eggs? We seem to eat a lot of eggs here.... scrambled, fried, boiled, deviled.. .. whatever.. we like eggs LOL How about taking a calcium suppliment? That might help with the bones.. and vit D would help it too. I also have osteoperosis and I am suppose to take Vit D, but have to have calcium with it. I hope I am of some help. There are others that are here to help you too! Again, welcome! huggs!
