1. Start, All programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Clean UP. Put a check by everything that contains 'junk'.
2. Place your mouse over the "Start" button and right-click to invoke a set of menu options. Click on "Explore" to open the Explore file management system.
Select the hard drive letter for which you want to run the Chkdsk utility. Right-click on the driver letter to invoke a set of menu options and select "Properties."
Click on the "Tools" tab in the "Properties" window. Under the "Error-Checking" section of the window, click the "Check Now" button. If you have User Account Controls enabled, a window will pop up asking permission to continue. Click "Continue."
Select "Automatically fix file system errors". Do NOT select "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors,". Click "Start."
Chkdsk will not run if your Windows Vista computer is in use, therefore it will request you to schedule Chkdsk. Agree to schedule. It will run the next time you boot your computer, so shut down the computer and then turn it back on (do not LOG OFF or RESTART, do a shut down). Turn computer back on, and at that point Chkdsk will run.
I don't know if this will fix the scroll problem .. but neither of these actions can harm your computer.
If it does NOT fix your computer, I suggest a virus scan .. this one:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
I have done what you suggested WV and we will see if it works - it was intermittent so it might take some time to check it out though.
Had to change a few of the steps but I got the idea (they changed some of the names) and it was pretty easy in the end.
Thanks WV - even it doesn't fix the problem I have a clean computer once again.
Just had to smile when I did the disc clean.....I removed more MBs than my early computer were in total. amazing how much we have progressed in the last 15 or so years in this area.
@ Bear blame Vista for spelling error OK?
Like I said it is ONLY on that one folder (my closet)...and it just started happening recently.........so I even scanned that folder separately........no virus found???
Seems to have started after I d/l some new kitten photo's to it.......maybe its just one of the kitties playing with my head!!!!!!!!!! Makes shopping for and outfit a PIA!!!!!!!!!!:(
But..........thank you for the suggestions:):)
You learned a couple of 'good things', I assume. Checkdisk should always be run immediatly after a 'bad' shut down .. like a blue screen of death or for whatever reason you power off with the power button instead of doing a "proper' shut down. I run it about once a month for the heck of it.
Disk cleanup is a safe way to get rid of 'junk' files .. including temporary Internet files. It is good to run about once a month too.
That 'on demand' virus scan is good .. it is 'new' from Microsoft. It is 'up to date' and does not 'install' on your computer .. you download it, run it, and that's it. No UNinstall needed. It is 'on demand'.
For Windows 7 users .. disk cleanup in W7 has been expanded .. it cleans up more 'junk' than Vista or XP's disk cleanup.
I dunno why that one folder is scrolling. That is an odd one.
Here is one example:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-Vista-Dynamic-Multi-Dimensional-Scrolling-39232.shtml
however, it mentions HORIZONTAL scrolling. I don't know if your problem is horizontal or vertical .. I get the feeling it is vertical .. so this may have NOTHING to do with your problem. Still, .. it is good to know about this.
I also found this:
"When you see a folder name or directory tree that is clipped off in the left pane of Windows Explorer, in XP you need to use the scroll bars to see it; in Vista as soon as you move your mouse over its location the view automatically smooth scrolls to center the view on that directory or tree level."
I don't know if any of this applies to your problem.
"Vista and below auto-scrolls down the directory tree so that the last save folder is visible on the screen to allow quick navigation to it's parent."
but I am not sure this has anything to do with your problem either.
Obviously, if it does it in normal mode but not in Safe Mode, it is 'something running' in normal mode that is the 'problem' .. which narrows it down to a few hundred possibilities.
Then.........when it does get to the end.and I try to scroll back up......sometimes..but not all the time.....the whole scroll area turns black??????????..as do the first few pictures on the right hand side by the scroll area...................
Start a new file? Separate some of your clothes into another folder (closet:) and maybe that will work? Just a thought......
Linda Jean........I might just try that........since its only that folder that does it............maybe I will just go shopping this weekend and start getting a whole new wardrobe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YIPPEE........a shopping spree:):)
