My only thought is that I never post in the off-topic area, and I never choose "ask for advice" where that's an option. If you go to the board of your choice and click "view all" you will only see things posted in the main discussion board, and no advice requests. So some people will never see your post. Does that make sense?
The buttons to view advice etc are at the top of the screen and somewhat hidden... hmmm
There is a social element here, and if you take that away or infringe on it, people will find other places to talk if they can't talk on DS.
But if you put limits on the "fun" places to post as well...where are people supposed to go to talk?
If someone's posting that much, can't you just put them on ignore if it bothers you?
It just makes every other sub forum slow and inactive because no one uses them. And no ones uses them because they are slow and inactive. LOL
Sometimes threads spin off of other threads. Sometimes someone sees something in another thread that makes them think, and they would like to further explore a particular subject. If threads were capped, then this could limit the ability of a person to explore something that strikes them, and then the entire purpose of the site disappears.
i dont use their site.
mingle2 (just say hi) has the kewlest forums cause they have one section with about 200 people on it at any time, because they dont use separate groups like off topic. because of this, you get real conversations, arguments, and support. most topics end within 10 minutes, with about 50 replies.
im not really a fan of limiting topics, as that would be hard to maintain fairly. as ive already posted over 20 replies today, and created a few topics.
i think just in general, DS should have time outs for certain users. ban them from a support group for a 1 - 3 day period. give CL the same control also to help control trolls. if a user accumulates a certain unhealthy amount of time on DS, temp ban them from the group to allow others to use the group, and help the user go offline and do something else. if they choose to stay on DS, let them go to another support group or just chat with friends...
When I was new here I got "temporarily blocked" as new people do who respond too much when they first join. For me that block was only for a few hours, but it really was a critical time for me. I would hate to see someone limited on getting help/advice or whatever they need because of some rule on the site saying they can't ask for help until tomorrow when they are needing it today.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But- I think DS should consider making the advice section etc... more visible so people follow the original organization DS had in mind.
As far as limiting time that people could spend on here... that would be very bad. I only come here when I am in need of distraction or help. Some days I might be here for hours, some days just a few minutes, some days not at all... It depends on what I need at the time...
As far as the number of posts a person makes. Some days I might post a couple, other days I don't post any, and spend my time answering others posts, or responding to comments others may have made on posts I made on different days.
Also... You can't just look at the name on the OP end of a post. You also have to look at the date that the OP was made. Sometimes I will see posts made last week or even from farther back, that have been responded to. That all needs to be taken into consideration.
