I am being treated for gerd with 40mg of nexium. I have done all the lifestyle changes and use gaviscon. Yet I still continue to suffer. I looked up ppi failure and it says it's usually people with really bad gerd or complicated gerd. The docs said they only saw a little bit of reflux during my barium swallow. I know people who have hernia and have responded to treated so why aren't I? It just makes me think that they have the diagnoses wrong.
My symtpoms are:
constant unsettled stomach
ibs like symtpoms
sinus problems
worsening during period (in fact this all started when I changed my contraceptive pill)
hunger pains
noisy stomach
wind
burning on right hand side (though they say it is not my gallbladder)
only occasionally heartburn
muscle cramp like pain on my left hand side
it all seems to get worse during my period and I have noticed the gerd like symptoms get worse when I am having constipation or bad bowel problems. They did a stool test and it showed positive for inflamation. My sister has colitis and I am waiting for another upper and lower gi test. Does anyone know if other diseases can mimic gerd. Surely if the treatment for gerd is not working it means that it isn't the problem in the first place and it is just treated a symptom rather than the cause?

Sadly my docs dont want to listen. I have had anxiety issues since I was little and they keep telling me its stress but I know my body and I know its not that!
Beejusbeenme - yes I came of the b/c pill. I was taking one that made me feel sick every time i stopped for my period so I decided to change. Sadly the new one made me feel sick all the time so stopped straight away but the feeling sick never went! I have tried others since but have a reaction and have just started the mini pill which has made me a bit worse but not too bad. Maybe that is just coinsidence (sp?) but I also have female issues and high prolactin which they blame on my antinausea pills
They havent tested me for barretts esophagus but wouldnt I get sore throats with that? I have had two bad ones in the last year but that is it. I am seeing a gastro doc but waiting for tests. Had to miss the last appointment as had a cold and am having upper and lower gi test done under a general anesthetic (the last two attempts failed as I kept pulling the upper gi camera out!). Also the barium swallow I had would have shown barretts wouldn't it?

i'm not sure if the birth control has anything to do with what your experiencing...I'm actually dealthly allergic to synthetic hormones(like in birth control pills/shots ect) I have in a copper IUD which has been amazing(I'm also allergic to latex)
