I have a question. I have Ulcerative colitis and every time my period comes around I normally end up not feeling too well. Well this month I was bleeding pretty heavy and I have had a pain on my left side for days. It almost feels like a pulled muscle or a stich in your side. When I go to touch it sometimes it hurts and then other times not too bad. I was curious if anyone else has had this pain, I am a little worried as it has lasted 4 days now and not feeling any better. I have had loose bowel movements and just not feeling up to my normal self.

Hey UCKelsey -

I am sorry that you are having such terrible pain on your left side along with all the other pains of this condition. I have never really thought about the pain I got because I always just referred to it as my UC. I have gotten this side pain that you seem to be referring to but I'm not sure what it's caused from. My advice to you would just be call your doctor and let him know about the pain you're having. If he thinks it's serious he will probably have you make an appointment. If it gets to out of control either go into urgent care or to the ER. I hope you the best. Stay well.

Thanks for your advice. I just have never felt this before and did n't know if it was a normal UC issue or something else. If it gets worse I will def. go in, and call dr.!

This happens to me when I start my period, sometimes it doesn't matter if I'm flaring or not. However, once it's done things usually go back to normal when I'm not in a flare.

I've experienced this as well, both during and outside of a flare while on my period. It very well may be pain you experience from an ovarian cyst. Cysts are part of the normal menstrual process when eggs are released. They don't always release when they should and can cause discomfort as a result. I've ended up in the hospital as a result of severe pain. Thankfully it only turned out to be a cyst and not something else. SO, it's something to think about anyway. I've also actually felt pain on my left side where I know my ulceration is, specifically if a bowel movement is in order.

Glad I am not alone by this feeling! I appreciate all of your suggestions and such. I just never had it hurt this long and hard but it is finally getting better!

Hey Kelsey,

Are you on birth control? If not it can really help with cramps and it is prescribed for cysts among other things. Also- you can continuously take your pills and skip your period. I never have a period when I am in a flare. It is too painful since your period will often make you more sensitive to any other pain you are feeling.

I think it was something to do with a cyst and my period is finally over and feeling a lot better. Tummy still upset at times, but no pain like it was! Thanks for your thoughts!
