I don't follow any set diet. Each person acts different to the different kinds of foods out their. What important is that your boyfriend eats a well balanced diet. For me I should limit my sugar intake and to be careful with raw fruits and raw vegetables. I seem to be ok with nuts too. I am careful with spices. Since I have been taking Humira I am able to have dairy products which is great for me because I like to eat cheese and ice cream. I eat chicken and fish more than red meats. I know you are looking for a special book. Someone might be able to recommend one. Again what works for me might not work with another person with Crohns. Make sure he enjoys what he eats. Eating can be a real pain for us when we are having a flair and the last thing we want to do when we are in pain is to eat but it is important for us to eat to keep our weight up. I don't know if this helped you but it is what works for me.

bart4u is spot on. Unfortunately, diet can be a lot of trail and error and strain on the pocket book! Everyone on this site has their own unique story of what works for them. My diet has changed quite a few times since I was dx with Crohn's 10 years ago. I just do my best to listen to my body and eat what it wants, not what my head wants. Right now, I'm at my best when I'm gluten free, lactose free and avoiding overly processed and sugary foods. I suggest that he keeps a food journal to track how certain foods make him feel and then really pay attention to cues from his body. This has been helpful to most but again not a sure fix. Also, a GI doc that he likes and trusts is key. I'm on my fourth one but he was worth the search.

You don't mention if he is new to Crohn's or not. One book that might be helpful is "The First Year, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis; An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" by Jill Sklar. It was helpful to me when I was first dx.

Check out the reviews of the book of the diet by Elaine Gottschall Breaking The Vicious Cycle at Amazon.com you can find it pretty cheap... It is very interesting... the Author had issues with Crohns and I found much of the info really truthful. Yes we are each different - the disease itself run different for each of us.
My triggers are dairy - too much sugar and stress. Each of these can triggers a flare that can keep me in the bathroom all day.
My recommendation would be your very own food diary or (your boy friends in this case) Keep one until you know what foods are helpful and which foods are not... Getting in tune with what helps and what doesn't - avoid the things that are making him miserable. I've had CD/UC since my early 20's and have pretty must stuck to foods I can eat...and taken those that make me miserable out of my diet - the only time I have issues is when I eat things I shouldn't or when my husband and I are at odds... I have not had to have surgery... Good luck to you!
