Prednisone short term should not cause problems for you in that short amount of time. In fact, it should start helping you right away (within a few days), which will likely be a big relief!. You are right in that the serious side effects come if you are on it for a long time. I was on pred on and off over the past year, which is definitely not ideal, but I think I made it out without any major complications.

I know it's not easy when you're feeling so poorly, but just try to relax and let the prednisone do it's work. You're going to be okay. Hope you start feeling better soon!

KewIB....I can definitely relate to what you're saying. I'm up late and eating....thought it was just me...lol

Have only been on it for three days and it has made so much difference!! I had canula into my vein on Monday and I think that started working pretty much straight away to be honest. Thank you for your advice. Supposed to be working from home to day but to be honest I can't really concentrate on anything, feeling crazy tired but I think that's probably from losing so much blood recently, would like that burst of energy to come!

I took prednisone for a very long time years ago..I did notice changes in my skin, more moles..
Recently took it and got stomach inflammation.

I'm on Prednisone at this time. (I'm 53 newly dx w/crohns and some other health issues) Started at 40 mg. with tapering 5 mgs. a week in mid-late June due to blockage from swelling. When I got to second week of tapering had another flare/infection issue and back in hospital. So, again to the 40mgs and to taper each week. So, it's been about 6 weeks on it now. Plan is start other meds end of month.

I also read about the side effects and it's not a medication to be taken lightly. So, far.. easy bruising, skin is much thinner, I get little cuts easily and it takes longer to heal. Trouble sleeping (taking it early morning seems to help a bit with that). Also have more energy, mood can change easily, but I realize why, so I work with it. Very hungry, blood pressure and blood sugar elevated, so watching that. Also a bit of acne. Over-all
nothing horrible that I know of yet.

It seems to really help with the crohns symptoms, but I don't want to stay on it longer than necessary. Right now it looks like it will be about 9 week total and I'm about 6 weeks in on weaning dose each week.

If you are taking Prednisone for Crohns you are usually on it for 3 three months. Most doctors start you at 40-60mg the you have to follow a taper down schedule. If you want the drug to work you have follow the schedule. My doctor has never given me a two week dosage. Prednisone takes time to work and it usually does the trick but there are side effects that come into play after a week on the drug. You will have a lot of energy at first, it is hard to sleep, some will get a blotted face, increased feeling of temper. After being on the drug for two months your bones and joints might ache. Each person is different but that is what happens to me. Being on the drug for a long time can damage your liver. I recommend you take all of your dosage is the early morning. Taking the drug in the afternoon or at night will cause more sleep problems. I wish you the best.

Probably the best/worst drug in my opinion! I recently was on it since last November and just got off it a about two week ago after tapering it down from 60mg. It definitely did the trick and got me out of my flare and kept it from coming back while i was in the hospital for a long 5 weeks but i paid the price in having many of the side effects. To include insomnia, huuge apetite, moon face, some joint swelling (mostly in my ankles after standing for long periods), some hair thinning, acne, and some mood swings. However since coming off it, most of the side effects have basically gone away and with a little more time the rest will go away. I hope you don't have to stay on it for too long, but if you do start seeing the side effects, don't get frustrated. Just know they will go away once you get off the "wonderful" drug ha. Well my dosage is only 10mg and I've been on it since the 18th. My last dose should be on the 6th, then I'll just be on on the one med Asacol. Not as long as some of you but long enough from what I've been hearing.
