I have seen where others have talked about their FEV, but I don't know what it means. I was at my Pulmo's last week and asked the nurse after she did a test and she was writing down FEV and some number. She told me I would have to ask the doctor because they are not trained as to what that means.....I was sitting there thinking that is a line of BS! Needless to say, I forgot to ask him! I could just kick myself. But, I know - there are many of you out there that are so very knowledgeable about this and I will be able to get an answer. Thank you in advance. As far as what the nurse said - a lot depends on what level and type of nurse she was - plus the fact is the doctor is the one that is allowed to diagnose the results. That being said, go back and ask for a copy of the test results (it is yours by right). It should look similar to the sample shown. Seems like a lot - two items that most look to as regards lung function is FEV1 and DLCO. The other measurements will often expand on the basic diagnosis. The amount and direction of change in the readings after using albuterol will often give a good idea as to the primary cause of the COPD diagnosis (bronchitis or emphysema).
Lots of things to interpret there - remember that knowledge is power when fighting this disease. If the doc won't explain it, sometimes you gotta find a new doc or root in and do a bit of figuring. Then go armed to your next visit with the doc...
