For me that is a very interesting question something Ive always been curious about. One needs a better description of what you consider a flare-up, but apparently there are alternatives or reasons not to use it. I have severe COPD/Emphysema (also CHF, perhaps that has something to do with it??) but compared to other people here and at rehab Ive been prescribed prednisone very, very infrequently only when hospitalized (and then not always) and afterwards only occasionally ten or so low-dosage pills staged to wean me off.

Im on Daliresp, Fluticasone Propionate, brovana, pulmocort, Spriva, montelukast. I get nothing else except the odd z-pack - Same thing every day, rain or shine, bad day or good day, flare-up, SOB, or calm. Everyone else seems to get extra stuff should I be jealous? Smile!

Prednisone seems to be the steroid of choice for inflammation when you have a "flare up" Yes it will cause weight gain if you are on it for a while. And if you are unlucky, it has other nasty side effects, but it will help your breathing. Some folks use natural methods for inflammation, or they say that, but have no proof it works. I am sure there are several foods and vegetables that would help. Someone will get on here and tell you some natural ideas, please don't use just anything without doctors ok.
Gnott, trust me my friend, you do not need to be jealous if you do NOT get prednisone !!!

I had to take prednizone for bad arthritis years ago. I was very worried about weight gain so I ate a lot of fruit & veg & drank lots & lots of water. I did not want to get the "moon face."

Have not had need for Prednisone for several years thank goodness but do remember how cramped up my legs would get until I got word of eat lots of banana's! Potassium took care of it and banana's are good for that. Taste good too.

i can't take prednisone--my dr just prescribes antibiotics & my inhalers
