Are you where you can have the windows open and a fan (like a box fan) running for a day or so to completely get the odors out? Of course the bedroom sleeping would have to be changed to another room. Even if he sleeps in another room, do not run the ac/furnace fan because it circulates and would just suck the fumes out of the bedroom and into where ever he is. I have never heard of odorless paint, I am sure there is some, and in my opinion, once you get the odor out which will be strong with regular paint for a day or so, it might brighten up his bedroom. Is he bedridden? I will let others who are more knowledgeable than I about painting, give their advice.....

If you go to the Behr.com website, they have a low odor, low VOC paint. I used one that also had primer in it, so I only had to use one coat, and I never had any breathing trouble, but everyone is different. Just check it out and see what you think.

paint fumes are a nasty business. My lungs are very well still yet when I walked through the hall that leads to the warehouse at work yesterday and they were painting the walls I could actually feel a brief spasm of the airway. I don't know which paint but the fumes smelled awful. Type of paint would surely make a difference. Look into which paints you can use since some paints will not attach properly to the old paint job, some may need a primer coat. It certainly could affect but for how long it lasts, and to what degree?....... I'd start with looking into that. Good luck

i wish i could put a fresh coat of paint on my living room walls, but i decided not to push my luck.
smells do annoy me so much now days and because of allergies to leave windows open while it dries wouldn't work for me.
if i had done it a couple of years ago i could/would have been able to open windows & i could have endured it so i guess it is how your husband tolerates smells & conditions.

if you do paint, let me know how it works for him, as i'd love to try it :)

He's not bedridden but unfortunately it's the only bedroom with a bed in it. The room has 2 windows, 3 if you count the attached bathroom so I can get plenty of ventilation and if I do it early enough in spring I could turn off a/c and heat. It's a very pale yellow right now so would probably only require one coat (with primer in the paint). I'll check out the Behr paint and then give it some more thought.

I know this is not quite the same thing, but parrots are extremely sensitive to paint fumes & will easily die from exposure. Use low odor, water based paint (latex). Open windows & blow fans in the room windows to dissipate fumes. Move hubby as far away from the fumes as possible until they are gone or just barely detectable. This means put him in the guest room or on the couch for a night, maybe two.

We follow these guidelines for my bird & myself when we paint, and neither of us has been the worse for it.

I'm sensitive to odors, but have had no trouble when my family used zero voc paint to paint my house. We bought it at Ecohome Improvement in Berkeley CA, but am sure you could find the brands they carry at other stores. The brands they sell are Yolo Colorhouse, American Pride, and Mythic. We used Yolo because I liked the natural colors.

I painted last week and 8 days later I still smell the fumes. I have moderate copd and emphy.
I have vinegar and water all around, will put more and put the fan back on. It is 50 degrees outside and raining I thought it would have cleared by now.
