I don't know if lungs can smell but I do know that they react to irritating smells that the nose picks up. Probably a tandem thing.

Yesterday, I walked into an Oral Surgeons office and the first thing I smelled was the potpourri that some put in little vases. No one else mentioned it so I knew that I was the only one so I did not mention it as my visit was short.

That is an interesting take on how we process smells.

Thank you for the post! My dad and I can smell perfume from a mile away! I can smell if people use scented laundry detergent as well, even overly scented shampoo.

last summer i learned this when my neighbors cologne made me literally panic and want to get away as fast as i could.
amazing, and as our copd get worse it seems our lung smells get more accute. (kind of opposite of what i would think).
This must be why cleaning products seem so strong smelling to me too.

I found an article that says we have taste buds in our lungs too--that "bitter" helps open our lungs if inhaled (how do you inhale bitter ;) )

I know why my food doesnt taste good any more besides no salt (CHF); my wardens* dish up an endless variety of ghod-awful herbs and spices, fruits with names I cant pronounce, bizarre pastas, and teas made from grass clippings.

Thankfully there is a Waffle House nearby.

@hanko125 - Im usually very suspicious of these kinds of articles myself and I perused this one before posting. Admittedly the title tests ones credulousness but beyond the title the author quotes a reputable professor from a well-known institution on a research published in a well-known science journal.

OMG .... LMAO .... Those lungs look more like elephant ears - perhaps the message should be that we ought to LISTEN to our bodies more often. I'm not slating the theory in the link - there's always a smidgen of logic in these reports, but COME ON, we can't eliminate every offensive smell from our space. Perhaps if we toned down our use of air freshners, perfumes, essential oils and scented body wash and go au natural, we'd probably be better off. ........... lol :-)))))))))))) Leonie xx

I've been very allergic to many perfumes and insecticides for 20+ years. The FDA has no authority to test toxic and dangerous chemicals found in perfumes and cosmetics. They are considered trade secrets.
