Dr. Thomas Petty, the father of oxygen therapy, wrote the following in his book, "Adventures of an Oxy-Phile 2:
Will I get hooked on oxygen?
The answer to this question is, of course you will since everyone is hooked on oxygen. But you will not get hooked on oxygen the same way someone gets hooked on a narcotic. It is easy to discontinue the use of oxygen if your pulmonary or cardiac disease improves adequately."
Keep in mind that supplemental oxygen is a drug factually known to extend and improve quality of life for those of us who need it.
That being said, I hope your doctor says you no longer need oxygen therapy. That would be wonderful.
Best wishes,
Susan

I had a scary thing happen tonight. I went out to dinner with Val and her grandkids in Utica. I drove in to see her today, about an hour and 10 minute drive. Beautiful, sunny day in Central NY....So, later on we went out for dinner, and then i dropped them home, and took off to come home.
I had my portable tank on in the car with me. I probably shouldn't have driven with a full stomach, and because I don't get enough sleep, I was finding myself swaying off the road, onto those riveted pavement markers, the ones that tell you you're off the road!! I kept finding that I felt so sleepy. So, I get into my town, and i know i'm feeling funny, dizzy..light headed.
Next thing I know, a cop has it's lights on. He pulled me over, about 5 minutes from my house. He asked if everything was alright, and that an undercover cop had been following me, and said I was driving funny. I told the cop, "I'm on oxygen, and i'm running out, and i'm feeling dizzy and lightheaded and sleepy. He asked if I needed an ambulance, i told him no...and i had an extra tank in the back seat, but i was just trying to get home.
So, he asked if he could follow me home, and i said yes..that would be nice.
Such a nice guy!! He walked me inside, carried my extra tank in for me, and told me he hoped i felt better. I told him " Thanks for being out there, looking out for people like me"..He said no problem, i'm just glad you're ok". He did ask earlier, if i had been drinking, and i said no. ( i don't drink).
so, i got home safely...but it was really scary. So, next time i have a big meal, i'm not going to drive home right away, or stay over...and if i'm sleepy or feel funny, or need to change my tank, I will pull over.
When I got inside, and ck'd my O2, it was 86 !!!
Home safe and sound,
Boo
I can be off of my oxygen; only when doing absolutely nothing. As soon as I exert; my oxygen saturation drops, and my heart rate climbs rapidly. I am end stage; or stage 4. When I was in the "moderate" stage; I only used oxygen at night.
I pray that things work out for you; as your wish. Blessings.
Let us know dear.
When I am on oxygen I can eliminate 1/2 of my medications, and I never use a rescue inhaler. I would rather use the oxygen than the meds.
Let us know what you doctor says.
