The price is reasonable enough and it may be able to replace some of the devices we use now or intend to buy.
I would like to talk personnally with someone at PMD Healthcare and ask a few questions. At present, I am trying to get the results of my last Spirometry that was done on Jan 6. I saw the doctor right after the test but she wanted to "study" the results so I am still waiting.
If I can manage to get a phone call to the company and if I get some of the answers I will add it to this thread. Right now I am having a little setback and am on the Pred and Zpack so feeling kinda sluggish.

At first read it looked like it didn't measure if your FEV1 was below 25% .. my mistake- those numbers means it measures the mid-breath, which is the average speed of air flow during the middle part of your exhale (25% of the breath to 75% of the breath). According to their rep:
"The Spiro PD accurately measures any exhale and calculates the %predicted for any range (it will give an error if there is no breath detected but it also shows your %predicted over 100%). Even though youre current normal may be around 16%, youd be able to see any changes in the numbers, even really slight differences so you can see how your day is going and if you need to make any adjustments, like resting or removing a trigger."
I asked about the need for calibration and length of time it was expected to remain accurate. According to the rep :
"The Spiro PD is calibrated during production so there is no need for further calibration in the field. We have completed accelerated life tests, which prove the accuracy for the life of the Spiro PD (at least 5 years). Weve used many of the same internal components as the large in office spirometers to ensure accuracy and the highest quality. Although the Spiro PD is a single patient device, it is designed for one person use so it can provide individual results based on that persons height, weight, gender, and ethnicity. Office spirometers require resetting each individuals statistics before use. Plus the Spiro PD stores all of your data so you can view any trends in your results to help you identify exacerbation triggers and manage your medications. "
when I questioned the lack of Clinical studies available on their product, the rep replied: There have been studies done on the benefits of home spirometry but none on the Spiro PD itself, yet. The Spiro PD was just released to market in November 2011. We are cleared by the FDA and certified with the CE mark for the European Union (EU) market. Spiro PD also meets American Thoracic Society (ATS) Standards and European Respiratory Society (ERS) standards. We follow the NHANES III Standards for the basis of all our % predicted values. "

Did also find another home lung monitor system that's been available for a while and runs about $129.00 without a Rx. In comparison it appear to have a tad bit better accuracy but both look good.
